Get To Know Mike Sherrard

Some people are just born with an entrepreneurial spirit, a strong drive to push themselves and the perseverance to stick things through. Mike Sherrard is one of those people, and has been since the beginning. Even in University he was able to buckle down and finish a Mechanical Engineering degree and a Technological Management & Entrepreneurship degree in three years. Even though he was headed to a corporate 9 to 5, books like Rich Dad Poor Dad, Think & Grow Rich, How to Win Friends & Influence People changed his mindset on what a “successful” life really meant.

Once the goal was set in his mind, Mike started focusing his time and energy on reading, networking, real estate, and business. He founded a start up, but kept his eye on the Real Estate industry. “When I do anything, I commit, and go all in. Diet, fitness, work. It doesn’t matter. I do everything 110%, and helping people buy their next home, or sell their current home, will be no different. To me, it is a lifestyle. Real Estate is not a career. I am dedicated to, and fully invested in, every aspect of my life as a whole.” If he’s not pursuing his career goals, Mike can be found hanging out with his family, obsessing over exotic cars, working out, biking, snowboarding and travelling. 

The question that he gets asks over and over again is “why would you leave a high-paying, secure job to start your own business?” Like every other entrepreneur, the desire to be your own boss is a strong motivator. Mike has been able to take what he’s learned from school and his corporate job and apply that to fulfilling his goals and achieving his dream in Real Estate. What was lacking in previous jobs was the passion for helping people and making a positive impact. Although many people find their passion in Oil & Gas, Mike felt unfilled and saw an opportunity in the Real Estate industry in Calgary. The journey for people buying their first home, a new home, or selling a home can be a milestone experience for some, and should be as enjoyable as possible. Calgary’s Real Estate industry is old school and dated and needs a modern update. “I was seeing my mentors in the United States leveraging social media platforms and technology, which produced massive results, and realized that people in Calgary have not yet caught onto this. I’ve decided that it is my duty to become ‘The New Standard’ in the Calgary Real Estate Industry through creativity and innovation.”

As a Realtor, Mike’s goal is to go Beyond the Sale and make the home buying and selling process about the overall experience while simultaneously building strong and lasting relationships. Using social media as the foundation of his marketing strategy, he’s hoping to reflect what modern users want to see and use including live video streaming. Social media has the ability to reach many people in the most effective and efficient way to influence people today. It is also a key tool to continue to grow and evolve with clients. 

With his new company, Mike wants to redefine the Real Estate industry and the overall buying and selling experience in Calgary. “I hope that what I do with my company, and the experiences and relationships I create, I can change how people think about buying and selling homes, and actually get excited to do so.” He’s also hoping to leverage community involvement and help other businesses grow. Through referrals, partnerships, and social media campaigns, he wants to make sure that everyone he is working with are also exceeding their goals.

The partnerships that have already been created since he started, has been rewarding and motivation to keep going. “Seeing how excited and emotionally invested they become when hearing about my vision, and the innovative ways I will help them grown and achieve their goals along the way, is extremely rewarding to me.” All the creative and innovative ideas that come from inner motivation and external partnerships are being channeled to ensure better results and experiences for his clients. The daily grind is something he thrives on, rather than becomes exhausted by and with the mindset of delayed gratification; Mike is able to keep pushing forward with new ideas, strategies, and opportunities. As Steve Jobs says, “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”

Mike’s motivation is also derived from his family who are the most supportive people he could ask for. “I have a dream of buying my dad his dream car (Audi R8) with a big red bow for Christmas one day, and making sure my parents retirement is filled with exciting memories from around the world.”

To other entrepreneurs, Mike’s advice is to commit to your goals 100%; put in the work and know there is no such thing as over night success; rid yourself of distractions; take risks and of course, have fun. “No matter how far fetched your goal is or how many obstacles you face, if you are not having fun along the way, stop. Entrepreneurs are crazy because they thrive off the failures and set backs, the sacrifices, and everything else the average person would consider as something negative. You need to have fun on your journey, otherwise, you will not make it.”

In the next six months, Mike wants to take his marketing and personal branding to the next level and foster relationships and partnerships that provide a wealth of free value to the public. And like any start-up, he hopes to see results in the upcoming months. Talking long term, the plan is to promote growth; build a strong, successful team over the next five years. Mike also hopes to impact the lives of people in the community by giving back by sponsoring kids who cannot afford sports, and hosting non-profit/charity events for the public. With constant innovation, Mike will stay ahead of the industry and revolutionize the Real Estate Industry in Calgary.
